A geisha is a female Japanese artist.  From a young age she is trained in the traditional arts of dance, music, and singing.  A geisha wears an elaborate costume of layers of kimono and an obi (sash).  Her hair style is a work of art in itself.  It is intricately styled and is adorned with many beautiful ornaments.  An apprentice geisha is known as a meiko, and wears a red collar.  A full-fledged geisha wears a white collar.  The Japanese Tea Ceremony is an important subject for a geisha to master.  It is very formal and must be performed in a very precise fashion.  Geisha perform an important function entertaining at banquets for important Japanese businessmen and women, government officials, and even foreign dignitaries on visits to Japan.
