What is a geisha?

A geisha is a female Japanese artist. From a young age she is trained in the traditional arts of dance, music, and singing. A geisha wears an elaborate costume of layers of kimono and an obi (sash). Her hair style is a work of art in itself. It is intricately styled and is adorned with many beautiful ornaments. An apprentice geisha is known as a meiko, and wears a red collar. A full-fledged geisha wears a white collar. The Japanese Tea Ceremony is an important subject for a geisha to master. It is very formal and must be performed in a very precise fashion. Geisha perform an important function entertaining at banquets for important Japanese businessmen and women, government officials, and even foreign dignitaries on visits to Japan.
