New House, New Dog

When I was about 7 or 8 we moved to a new house and within about three months or so, we not only had the entire brood, Mom, Dad, four kids, three cats & a couple of guinea pigs, but we seemed to have inheriteda stray Irish setter that the vet estimated was about 2 when we claimed her.  To my recollection, this was the family’s first dog, although apparently there was actually another Irish setter that died when I was 2 or 3.  Candy was fiercely protective of all four of the kids, but was never violent.  She would stand between us and the property line with an occasional low growl, but she simply wanted to protect rather than fight.  She would even take up for the cats!  She was very playful would go with us anywhere we would let her but was ecstatic to visit the pond, splash enthusiastically & drench us in the process!  She’d cover us in her dog colognes too. Unfortunately, Candy suffered from hip dysplasia that eventually caused her to be unable to walk and that, along with old age, about 16 years old we think, cost her life but for a die-hard cat lover, Candy was the best!
