When I was about 7 or 8 we moved to a new house and within about three months or so, we not only had the entire brood, Mom, Dad, four kids, three cats & a couple of guinea pigs, but we seemed to have inheriteda stray Irish setter that the vet estimated was about 2 when we claimed her. To my recollection, this was the family’s first dog, although apparently there was actually another Irish setter that died when I was 2 or 3. Candy was fiercely protective of all four of the kids, but was never violent. She would stand between us and the property line with an occasional low growl, but she simply wanted to protect rather than fight. She would even take up for the cats! She was very playful would go with us anywhere we would let her but was ecstatic to visit the pond, splash enthusiastically & drench us in the process! She’d cover us in her dog colognes too. Unfortunately, Candy suffered from hip dysplasia that eventually caused her to be unable to walk and that, along with old age, about 16 years old we think, cost her life but for a die-hard cat lover, Candy was the best!

Today I woke up early. Although I was a little hung over, I was happy to see that it was sunny and hot outside. I went back to my house and then went with my dad to the Met game. On the way there, we stopped at Battaglia to get sandwiches. My dad got an Italian sub and I got a turkey sandwich. When we got to the game, it was great to see the new stadium for the first time. It was made even better by the fact that the Mets won in walk-off fashion when Daniel Murphy doubled home Jeff Francour in the bottom of the ninth. The Pepsi Patrol shot t-shirts into the stands and for the first time I ever, I caught one, even though some guy tried to wrestle it away from me. All in all, it was a great day and we didn’t even get stuck in too much traffic on the way back from the game. I also had a lobster roll for dinner which was delicious as usual. Now I’m watching Entourage.

Last night I spoke to the esteemed Ken McCort on my podcast, Regarding Rover. It was a breath of fresh air and a sigh of relief to hear him say that we should all relax, not just a little, and start being friends with our dogs instead of trying to be pack leaders. Dressing them in doggie pajamas is ok though. I wanted to talk to Ken about this because there is so much misinformation, competing opinion and downright crap out there about dogs and how we should train them. Some so-called experts drivel on about wolves and wolf pack behavior without so much as ever seeing an actual pack of wolves. Instead, they repeat statements that have been repeated for years, without knowing where those statements came from or bothering to find out what has been learned since those statements were made. The worst of them go on to elaborate, exaggerate and extrapolate these statements until they are nearly unrecognizable.

You can bring up your dogs on a healthy vegetarian diet. Dogs need to have a balanced diet that gives them all the nutrition they need. Many dog-owners accomplish this with a vegetarian diet, and their pets live long and healthy. For over 60 years, all the dogs in my family have been vegetarian. Many owned by other family members were repeatedly prize winners at dog shows in the 1950s. My grandpa recommends milk, fresh curd, whole wheat bread, unpolished rice cooked with carrots, peas, potatoes, greens, turmeric and a spoonful of ghee, and chappatis. His dogs relish these when served warm. He loves his dog Christmas stockings. My dog loves wearing a coat when its been on show and when we are out, as it is black in color the coat is red with white spots make it so beautiful and attractive.
